In the West Midlands, Staffordshire (postal abbreviation Staffs.; /ˈst fərdʃɪər, -ʃər/) is a county that is landlocked. Administered separately from the rest as an independent unitary authority, Stoke-on-Trent is the largest city in Staffordshire. Since 1974 have been part of the county of West Midlands, and Walsall, Wolverhampton, Smethwick and West Bromwich are within the boundaries that are historic of Staffordshire.

East Staffordshire, Cannock Chase, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Lichfield, Stafford, South Staffordshire, Tamworth, and Staffordshire Moorlands, are districts that Staffordshire is divided into apart from Stoke-on-Trent. Staffordshire into five hundreds was divided: Offlow, Cuttlestone, Totmonslow, Seisdon, and Pirehill. What is now the metropolitan West Midlands is much covered by the historic Staffordshire.

In Stoke-on-Trent are the theme park Alton Towers is in the Staffordshire Moorlands and several of the world's largest pottery manufacturers. Staffordshire University which in Stafford, Stoke-on-Trent, Shrewsbury and Lichfield has campuses, and Newcastle-under-Lyme's Keele University, are the universities in the county. There were 407 Jewish people in the non-metropolitan Staffordshire, and 83 in Stoke-on-Trent, according to the 2001 census.

Heart, Smooth, and Planet Rock, which cover the southern parts of the county, include stations which cover parts of Staffordshire. Secondary schools in Staffordshire Moorlands and South Staffordshire are from 13-18, but most are from 11-16 or 18. For non-metropolitan county, the top-tier council is Staffordshire County Council.

A total of 13,739 making up 1.3% of the population, there were in Stoke-on-Trent 7,658 Muslims and in the rest of Staffordshire 6,081 at the census of 2001.
